The pancreas is an organ that plays an important role in the digestive and endocrine systems. The pancreas is located between the stomach and small intestine and is an organ about 15 cm long.
The pancreas has two main functions. The first is to secrete digestive juices. The pancreas secretes various substances such as enzymes, water and bicarbonate ions, which aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients in other parts of the digestive tract.
Second, the pancreas functions as part of the endocrine system. The pancreas produces hormones such as insulin and glucagon. These hormones help regulate blood sugar in the body. Insulin helps cells absorb glucose, lowering blood sugar levels. Glucagon, on the other hand, helps to release glycogen stored in the liver and deliver it into the bloodstream by increasing blood sugar levels.
These two basic functions of the pancreas are very important for the body to function in a healthy way. Pancreatic diseases can cause serious problems in the digestive and endocrine systems and require treatment.
